And who better to write love stories than a woman who’s found her true love (at the age of six), lost him, found him again, lost him again, and who still believes he’s out there somewhere…just waiting to be found—again?
That first true love continues to be my inspiration. He was a green-eyed, blond-haired boy who stole my heart when my family moved just across the alley from his. Even now, I can remember the way he kinda made me sick to my stomach with his smile, the sound of his voice, the way his little hands sculpted those mud pies he was going to throw at me. I didn’t know what it meant; I only knew I wanted to be sick every day of my life. I must’ve spent half my childhood dreaming about how he and I would have 2.5 kids, a home in the suburbs, and a three-car garage, in order that we would have room for our two cars and ALL MY BOOKS!
Well, things don’t always work out the way you dream… life gets complicated, stuff happens, and sometimes you forget where you’re going. But when I finally figured it all out, the one thing I knew was that I still loved books…and dreaming about that boy. So after spending way too many years sitting in a three-sided cubicle, reading technical documents that were drier than the Nevada desert, under those ever-glamorous fluorescent lights, I hunkered down in my home office and worked my fingers into a frenzy, until I had something to restore that romantic gleam in my eye. Yes, it was good-bye business suits, hello Victoria’s Secret jeans and fuzzy sweaters…proper attire for any romance writer. FYI…have kept my toenails polished and my hair fluffed. Also FYI…fuzzy socks, a steaming mocha, and a little dark chocolate are a great way to start each day, not to mention they help one get in the proper frame of mind to write passionate prose. Besides plotting love, I also enjoy gardening (I never tire of coming up with new ways to foil the attempts of local wildlife to strip my favorite plants of all their foliage), practicing the piano (Notice I say practice, because after continuing to play some of the same songs for more than twenty years, I think it’s safe to say I won’t ever be a concert pianist), and hiking with my two yellow labs in Washington’s beautiful Alpine Wilderness. I do a lot of mind writing while I slog those trails, and can sometimes plot out an entire book on a single hike. All that fresh air must give my brain a boost. As for that little blond-haired, green-eyed boy…I’m sure I’ll always wonder What if… At least until I find another boy to take his place.
